I Met Many People Who Use A Pretty Flat Pillow...

Why is using a pretty flat pillow no good? You have curves in the spine that should be maintained. A "C" curve in the neck, a curve the opposite way in the mid-back, and a "C" again in the low back (more of an ellipse though). This is when looking at our body from the side of course. From the front view - we are straight up and down.



To maintain those curves we need support when we sleep. A flat pillow is flattening out the curve. Also, if we have no curve or even an accentuated curve in part of the spine, it affects the rest of the spine. For example, if the head is perched forward it will often cause the lower back to extend backward more.

Lastly, any deviation from the normal, puts pressure on nerves an causes unwanted imbalances.

Stretches To Help Low Back Pain

I thought of these because I used to often recommend a stretch routine for a number of low back pain patients I saw.

My dad hurt his back a bit dragging a small tree that was uprooted during a storm. P.s. It was still heavy. We got him adjusted but he needed something he could do at home.

Two stretches that work really well:

#1 - Knee to Chest - here's how to do it: lay on your back and pull the knee to the chest. Hold for 20 seconds. Do each leg and do some with both legs. Repeat each way 3 times. *if the knee hurts or is injured then hold under the knee.

#2 - Seated, Reach to the Floor Sitting - spread your legs out and reach to the floor. You often can reach a bit further each time. Repeat 3 times and hold for 20 seconds.

Jaw Trigger Point Massage...

Have you ever went to bite that apple? Or opened your mouth and heard a big pop? If you look in the mirror opening and closing the mouth, it may seem awkward. Instead of straight up and down your jaw may veer sideways even creating a "Z" pattern. You can often fix this by massaging the muscles. Here's a video on massaging the jaw:

What Is Cervical Spondylolsis?

This is degeneration of the neck spine. Cervical refers to the neck or C-spine. Spondylolsis means degeneration or break-down.

You may be asking yourself: Do I have any? Unfortunately, most people will get degeneration. Another common term for this break-down is "Arthritis".

What's the best remedy, especially if there's pain. One major key is to align the spine. This keeps the nerves free from pressure and prevents break-down.

Standing At Your Desk...

Many people tell me how they only have pain when they get up from a seated position or are seated to begin with. This can be a very low cost way that helps you or your employees. So many I talk too want to rush into a surgery. This will often take a long time to heal, not to mention, cost more than you anticipate. The average back surgery cost tens of thousands and isn't always fully covered. And don't forget, the results aren't always stellar either...

Now they have standing desk stations. Yes, you can attach it to your current desk and stand to work comfortably. This also works well for someone who must move often. No more getting up and down; you are already ready to go. The only negative is if you were planning to nap at work. It's often hard to sleep standing up!

You can even walk on a treadmill and work (Isn't for me) or stand on a balance board. Just as long as your productivity doesn't change...

Motion Is Life!

Yes, you heard it right. This is a very true statement. Every joint in the body can move, without it there's a problem.

How can we lose that motion? One big one is arthritis. The joints build up degeneration in the form of bone. With this buildup comes reduced motion.

To some extent there is a double edge sword. If you don't move, arthritis more easily builds up. If you have bad motion then arthritis can build up...

In other words we need to exercise, but do it with proper motion and good posture. Not just the joints but other parts of the body work better when we have motion. Blood flows, nutrients flow, waste gets removed, all the way down to the cellular level.

Why Cracking The Neck Can Be Dangerous!



So what is "cracking the neck"? It's typically moving the neck around until you get a release or "pop"; this is just a gas release in the joint.

That release does feel good; you get that immediate release, the problem is that the relief doesn't last. The reason is because you are just moving things around but not always getting it back in place. Getting spinal bones in proper alignment takes pressure off of nerves and keeps pain away.

So if you self adjust you run the risk of putting something out of alignment. And if it stays that way you can be in real trouble...

How Does The Neck Effect The Back?

First, the whole spine is connected. 24 spinal vertebrae with a disc between them. The last bone is called the sacrum. If your spine is out of alignment, then your posture will be too. Let's say you have forward head, your back then extends to bring the head up.

So from that example you can see how bad posture of the neck can create bad posture in the low back. This means nerve pressure and that means pain...

Also, your brain is the main control center. Messages come from there and have to go though the neck before they get to the lower back...

You need to correct that neck curve... What is the fastest way to do that? Use true neck traction, use a neck pillow, and do neck exercises. If you have a Chiropractor adjusting you too, even better. Yet Another Fake Sugar...

Okay, here's the bottom line - if you want something sweat, use real sugar, don't use aspartame, something else fake, even stevia (primarily in tampered with looks pretty natural and comes from a plant, but who knows what they do to it?). Natural cane sugar is your best option.

They are finally acknowledging that aspartame is absolutely toxic (you know the fake sweetener in many things - all diet sodas for example). Anyway, my point is, they've got a newer sweetener - except it's made from chlorine - this may be even worse??? Are we going from bad to worse? - you be the judge... Watch out for it; don't eat it! Am I Getting Enough Vitamin D?

When doing the basic blood test, anything less than 30ng/ml is considered low. According to the CDC(Centers for Disease Control) a significant number of males come up short of this number. Most areas it's very difficult to get enough sun because the angle to the earth is such that for most of the year you won't get the Vitamin D.

Here's what to do: You can always move to central Florida or further south where you are at a latitude where you get Vit D all year. That can a bit difficult though so I recommend taking a supplement. Also, keep in mind that animals store this vitamin in their fat. Therefore don't be afraid to eat meat with so fat. Lastly, don't drown yourself in sunscreen when you do go out. If you know you may get burnt - cover up.

Sitting too much? Look at the Treadmill Desk!

I just watched how workers can be on a treadmill while working on a computer. I'm a fan of multitasking but sometimes it can be counter productive. For example - how can you type good while on a treadmill?
It's funny, I just met a woman at my gym I go to. I asked her: "do you mind if I change the channel?" She told she wasn't watching, and showed me her book. I just can't read or type while moving. I guess of you can, all the power to ya.
