Do You Have A Lower Back Support Belt?

I am going over how to use my favorite support belt. I like it because it's easy to use, it does the job, and you can wear it under clothes. Most people will have and undershirt, wear it over that, and under your next shirt. When you have it off, you can roll it up really small so it's out of the way... The Back Dr’s specializes in pain relief for the neck and the lower back. We will help you have better posture, get better sleep and help you be more comfortable. Helping you find natural remedies for your active lifestyle.

Mainly texting is bad for your neck and the rest of the spine. Here's what I recently posted on facebook: I knew texting can be bad for you neck and spine - but this is really bad... Look, we are all gonna text and type, etc. and we're not stopping anytime soon. Just take periodic breaks, and look up once in awhile. "The bottom line is not to be too crazy, but take care of your spine and it will take care of you".

Stretch Before and After...

So they say you stretch before to prevent injury and after to keep limber. This can work for you if you regularly work out, are a weekend warrior (you know who you are), or even if you don't do much physical exercise. Let's take the last case - you can still stretch in the morning and then after your day, in the evening. You'll notice that you can stretch further in the evening, after a normal day. The same goes for someone who regularly works out, or even that weekend warrior. Stretch out before that day on the course, or maybe on the ski slopes, or that intramural basketball game. This will help you loosen up and prevent an injury. And afterwards do some stretching to keep loose and improve that future flexibility. The Back Dr’s specializes in pain relief for the neck and the lower back. We will help you have better posture, get better sleep and help you be more comfortable. Helping you find natural remedies for your active lifestyle.

Can My Back Pain Be Coming From My Stomach

Yes, your back pain can be coming from your stomach. If anything in that core region is disrupted you may have lower back pain. Think of the core as the middle of the body; sort of like if you had a hula hoop around the waist - that's your core!

Everything works together, so if your stomach is really weak then your back may be picking up the slack. Or let's say one side oblique muscles are constantly short and taut...the opposite side may be constantly stretched. This can cause an imbalance and therefore pain! Posture plays a very important role in overall health.

The Back Dr’s specializes in pain relief for the neck and the lower back. We will help you have better posture, get better sleep and help you be more comfortable. Helping you find natural remedies for your active lifestyle.

Heels That Look Painful...

I recently traveled by plane to visit my friends that I have known for a long time. As I was waiting for my connecting flight, I had nothing to do but "people watch". I saw a couple woman with heels on that looked so uncomfortable. One looked like she was actually in pain walking...

We have to remember if we don't have a sturdy base we will get problems higher up the body. In other words, bad foot alignment will affect our spines.

Not only that, our gaits (how we walk) plays a role too. In the airport, this was Atlanta by the way; a big airport. So you may have to walk a long distance as well.

Bottom line is that if they look painful, they probably are. All I'm saying is that when you travel, you don't need a big heel, because it may hurt your feet and do damage further up the spine.

How Can I Boost My Metabolism?

Boosting your metabolism can play a big role in weight loss. First, stay active - not just your body but the mind too. You will burn more than you think! Instead of sitting on the couch eating and watching tv, do some crunches during your favorite show. Drink more water - not only will it fill you up but it's great substitute for a sugary drink. It is also used in most body processes and has been shown to help boost the metabolism. Eat more fruits and veggies - researches at the University of Florida found that when two groups consumed the same number of calories, the one with more fruits and vegetables had smaller waist sizes... Lastly, eat less processed foods. Processed foods contain more sugar and other "junk"; just look at the label. If the ingredient list is giant and you don't know what half the items are, it's probably not good for you. The Back Dr’s specializes in pain relief for the neck and the lower back. We will help you have better posture, get better sleep and help you be more comfortable. Helping you find natural remedies for your active lifestyle.

A 3D Picture of the Spine

Here is a 3D picture of our spine, I'm showing you this because I wanted you to see the curvatures. We have a "C" curve in the neck, a wider opposite curve ")" in the dorsal or thoracic spine, and another "C" (actually an elliptical curve) in the low back. The spine was built this way to withstand all external forces at its best.

Too Much Sleep Also Hurts My Back

Has it happened to you?

You overslept or went back to bed for anther hour and then woke up with an achey back. It is similar to standing somewhere or maybe sitting too long somewhere. Things stiffen up, inflammation builds, and muscles shorten.

So how do we prevent this? Well #1 is to set an alarm or try not to sleep too long. The same goes for sitting to long or maybe standing too much on a hard floor. #2 is to drink more water. Water helps to keep the muscle, discs, and other joints hydrated. #3 is exercise and stretch regularly. This keeps muscles and joints loose and limber.

The Back Dr’s specializes in pain relief for the neck and the lower back. We will help you have better posture, get better sleep and help you be more comfortable. Helping you find natural remedies for your active lifestyle.

Hard Lumbar Belts...

Most often I recommend a softer type belt. I've found they're easier to use, more comfortable and something the vast majority will like better. The reason is really so we can get some movement. Whereas the hard one restricts the motion completely. There are times when the hard one might be needed. Maybe right after a serious surgery for example. For most suffering with back pain, we want some stability! But we want to get them moving again. Motion is life they say; each joint has motion, and it's when we stop moving for too long it's a problem. Motion allows inflammation and other cell waste to exit an area. It also helps nutrients and other important cells get to an area. Therefore, we want to restore motion as soon as we can! The Back Dr’s specializes in pain relief for the neck and the lower back. We will help you have better posture, get better sleep and help you be more comfortable. Helping you find natural remedies for your active lifestyle.

Do You Have The Right Pillow?

I see many who base their pillow size on the size of their bed. This may work for decorative or throw pillows, but not for sleeping... For instance you can have a really petite/ small woman with a big pillow for her king size bed. That doesn't work because it just pushes her head up. And that's not what we want.

Really pillow size is based on height, but everyone's a little different...

What I mean by this is #1 - some people just prefer a certain size pillow. I have some people who fit the height mold for the small traction pillow but love a bigger pillow.

I also have a couple guys who are shorter than 6'1" but they have a football players neck. They like the large version of the traction pillow. Or let's say you're tall but have a shorter neck, maybe the medium is the way to go! The Back Dr’s specializes in pain relief for the neck and the lower back. We will help you have better posture, get better sleep and help you be more comfortable. Helping you find natural remedies for your active lifestyle.

Bode Miller's Back...

This stuff was in Bode Miller's Bake! Before we all freak out, it sounds like the medical staff dyed it blue for some reason.
Apparently disc material has come out, that's what this stuff is... Now, hopefully the body can put it into waste and get rid of it. But really who knows. This can be pressing up on a nerve and cause some major pain.

Make Sure You Do Your Strength Training...

I always knew that it was important to do a certain amount of resistance training. It actually helps bone growth when you have add weight to the mix. In other words just doing air punches or arm circles doesn't cut it because you have no weight against you. Now a new study from Georgia Tech shows us that temporarily stressing muscles helps improve memory.

Yes, according to Good Housekeeping Magazine (GH Jan 2015), the research showed that lifting for just 20 minutes may improve your memory by 10%. You don't necessarily have to pump iron but using bands or machines works too. Who knew; a little weight lifting can be good for you back and body, but your mind also.

KEEP YOUR BACK SAFE WHEN SHOVELING...

Did you know that about 11,000 people injure their back's shoveling? Yeah, pretty crazy right? That being said, here's some shoveling tips. Before even shoveling make sure you are dressed adequately. The weather channel link will even give you some tips on that.

Here's what to keep in mind when shoveling.

  1.  If you experience pain; stop shoveling. Have someone else do your driveway. And it's totally worth it to have someone plow your driveway.
  2.  Bend with your knees. Flex the knees and bend as much as you can with them versus bending solely at the back.
  3.   Pick up and dump snow with the shovel as straight on as possible.  In other words, don't bend and twist, that's the worst position for the back.
Other things to keep in mind in the winter is you aren't getting much vitamin D.You also are in the house alot so you don't get as much fresh air. You also need to keep warm enough. This is especially important when preventing a cold. Don't forget that most heat leaves your body through you head, so wear a hat...Keep those thing in mind too.

Do You Have "Computer Body"?

What's "Computer Body" you might ask? This is that forward head, slumped shoulders, hunched back, type posture. We are all guilty, "just 1 more thing to do..."; of course that "one more thing" may be another 20 minutes. Maybe you gotta pee. Holding it too long probably isn't a great idea either, but let's get back to the subject.

We've talked about that forward head posture and how detrimental it is. Once in a while is one thing, but most people have this computer body every day. And it's not just at work. When we come home we often get on our own computer, tablet or phone.

Think about it when the head goes forward the shoulders roll forward and the upper-back hunches... It can happen in any order. So these terms like :computer body", or "tech neck" sound funny, but exist for a reason. Especially at this day and age where we are on computers and phones all the time!

    The Eight Hour Sleep Myth...

In the past we really didn't sleep 8 hours at a time, it was broken up into two 4 hour chunks. Anyway that was the subject of a BBC news magazine article I read... Here's the link: "BBC News Magazine" What I have learned is that people will typically sleep around 6-9 hours a night. If you wake up rested and usually feel good you are probably doing alright. I will recommend a neck pillow however because you may sleep ok for 8 hours, but is it the best sleep you can get?

    Your Doctor Isn't GOD!

Some docs think they're like God; watch out for those guys.  I know many people that are almost afraid to go to their medical doctor for fear they get prescribed something dangerous or that doesn't work, maybe both, they get sent for unnecessary tests, or go under the knife with little chance of improvement, in fact, big chance of being worse.

Some things may seem obvious to you but if there was no professional study on it, your doc may not take your word for it... So if your doctor alway has to be right or doesn't really listen to you, pleas see another one.
