"I Strained My Back Putting Up The Tree..."

There are a whole lotta ways we strain our backs. Keep in mind that, it usually been building up, which is why it can happen quite easily. For example, you may think: "I wasn't really doing anything, why does my back hurt". When, in fact, you got in a small fender bender, shoveled the driveway two times in the last week, and sat for exorbinate amounts of time at work for the last three days. All of these things may have predisposed you for a major back pain episode to occur. So you see, it wasn't just getting set for the holiday, but a number of things leading up to this point.

I'm Making A Long Car Ride, What Is Best To Take?

When making a long trip, the key is to be prepared.  So besides the usual, got gas, got water... You need to make sure your back has what it needs too!

I would recommend an ice pack.  Take one of those soft coolers; you can easily put the ice pack in there.  Take a bottle of Biofreeze; that's always good to have and easy to travel with.

The main thing is to take periodic breaks, where you get up and move around.  The same thing goes when you're on a plane.  If you're having a current episode a tens unit may be good to take too.  I don't know if you should have it out on a plane...but if you're driving somewhere it's good to have.

Lastly, your car probably has a good lumbar support, but if you feel like you want more support or just a better support, bring something like a Sitback rest or slim rest along.

Why Torture Yourself...

Here's the scenario; you wrench your back moving somefurniture.  Use that heat pack and/or Biofreeze you have.  Why Torture Yourself just trying to keep going or toughing it out for days.

"I'm just too busy to stop and sit with the heat or put gel on my back, besides I can't reach anyway."

C'mon now, let's not make excuses.  Let the hot shower soak on the back, have someone apply it for you, etc... And take a break, heal your wounds.  If not, you may be worthless for days?

So next time this sort of thing happens, do the right thing and tend to your body.  If you give you back love, it will love you back.

Your Returning Neck Pain Might Be Due To Your Pillow?

Chiropractic adjustment help to align the spine but if you constantly work to undo those treatments, you are not doing yourself any favors.  It's sort of like walking up the down escalator; it takes a lot of work to go anywhere.

If you feel good after your treatment but keep waking up the next day with pain, you have to ask yourself: "what may I be doing?"  A recent person described to me a pillow that wasn't giving him support anymore.  On his side, he literally had a huge neck and head tilt...  Keep doing that at night and this will become your posture.

How Does Stretching Help My Back?

Stretching may alleviate pain in the back.  It can do this for 3 reasons:
1) it keeps things loose and mobil - motion is a big key.  They often say "motion is life".  When an area moves like it should #'s 2 and 3 increase.
2) it increases blood flow - when an area can get more blood it can get all the nutrients it needs. Healing cells likes macrophages, and other white blood cells, water, and more.
3) it increases oxygen flow to the area - oxygen is a major player when it comes to healing.  Oxygen is known to heal and revitalize many tissues, muscle is just one of them.

These are the technical reasons it can help with back pain, but if you know it feels good, you'll most likely do it for that reason alone.

If It's Not Working Then Change

I know a number of people who keep seeing the same doctor even though they're not getting better.  That doctor may not know unless you tell him.  But who's fault is it then, the responsibility lies on you.  Make a change; see someone else, try a different treatment, etc...

You want to be 100% healthy or as close to it as you can.  That is why I put a number of products on my website that have been tested in the office.  If I didn't like it, I don't sell it.  It's that simple.  I realized a long time ago that there were so many people I could help, but they were just to far away.  This is why I've put a number of these products on my website; that way, no matter where you are you can get relief...

Do You Twist And Turn A lot Driving?

I ask this question because I've had people come to my office due to this kind of injury driving.  You definitely turn your neck a certain amount; I've actually seen a couple of people who strained their neck backing out of the driveway.

What I want to talk about here is people who also may strain their middle or lower back.  Now I'm not talking about getting side swiped or something like that, I'm talking about self inflicted pain.  I've seen a number of animated drivers, ones who don't just turn the neck but the rest of the body too.

We're not dealing with enemy fighter jet who we are always looking in our blind spot for... Therefore you shouldn't have to twist your body a lot.  The same goes for trying to reach something that fell on the passenger seat floor; don't do it!

We have a friend that drives a cab, and you should see him, it seems like he never turns much at all.  He is really good at using his mirrors.  Something we all should get good at because you know traffic only increases and gets faster.

Get blind spot mirrors, do what you have to do to make driving more comfortable, but limit your body twisting and turning, it will prevent injury.

The "Tennis Ball" Trick

Using a tennis ball is a great way to massage out trigger points in the muscles. Trigger points are when the muscle binds up and creates a knot. This often causes pain because it restricts motion and puts pressure on nerves. Watch this short video where a chiropractor shows how to use the tennis ball. Who uses a Low Back Support Belt?

The answer to that question is: anyone who wants to keep their back pain free. I like this particular belt I'm showing below because it's thin and has some give to it. Most people won't need a support that has no give to it. Take a look...you can even wear it under clothing.

“Doc, Your Going To Crack Me, Are You?”

As a chiropractor for 13+ years, I am still surprised to see some people are afraid of getting treated with chiropractic because they think there is a chance of bones being broken or some other bodily harm. Or even hear how another doctor says not to get chiropractic because it’s dangerous.

Chiropractic is one of the safest treatments out there. Let’s say someone has an ache in the back. They go to the medicine cabinet and take a pill. Well that medicine doesn’t just go right to the area in pain but goes everywhere in the body. It’s like using an atomic bomb to a whole town to get rid of mice in one house.

The chiropractic adjustments we do are a safe and gentle way to stop a problem or a pain without having to drop that “atomic bomb”, and maybe cause more problems than we started with.

To learn more about our safe, gentle, chiropractic treatments, speak with one of our chiropractors at (860) 633-8756.

I'm Not Really a Medicine Guy, Can Chiropractic Help Me?

It's very possible. The first step is to come into the office for an exam. Here, the doctor can take a look at you and talk to you to find out what's going on.

In most cases a couple simple adjustments to a bone or bones of the spine may do the trick. Oh yeah, don't worry it so gentle and easy, you'll be surprised.

"What about getting my neck cracked, I don't want that...?"

No problem, there are many different adjustments to do. Just tell the doctor that and here at CT Spine & Disc Center we will honor your wishes!

As We Get Older We Don't Heal As Quick...

When we were younger, we start out as a toddler learning to walk, and we crash here and slam down there. And we just pop right up like nothing happened. Then we get a little older, and we tumble over here, jump from there....often with a crash, bang, boom. Then we get a bit older and start plying organized sports - more crashing, usually harder, because it's someone else contributing to the spill...

As you may assume, some of those bumps and bruises carry over to us later in life; not to mention, when we take a fall now in our 60's, we don't recuperate so quick.

So it's okay to go a little slower, be a bit more cautious, stop performing certain activities... It might be hard to hang up the rugby kleats, but is it worth it to take care of a back injury.

If this does happen however, we are here at CT Spine for YOU. Or maybe, you simply strain something in the back getting up from the chair (most often it happens unexpectedly, and from something we don't expect). Either way, don't hesitate to contact the office if something hurts.

I'm Pregnant and Have Back Pain, Help!...

"I'm about 3 months pregnant and my back is killing me...".

At our office we've heard this kind of thing quite a few times.  We have seen a lot of pregnant women over the years.   It's fairly common to be hindered with back pain when your pregnant.  Just think of your posture alone, when you add a bunch of weight to your belly.  An example would be the picture. Ok, this person is probably 8 months pregnant?  But, many people start getting lower back pain way before they might look like this...

So you might also be thinking, "how can he adjust me?"  That's easy actually. Besides the fact that the ligaments tend to get very lax, we have a variety of adjusting techniques.  It's not all "twisting and cracking" anymore.  There are so many more gentle ways to get motion restored and to align the spine.

We have a tool we use to adjust as well as a special table that allows for gentle adjustments.  If you want to learn more about this, stop in or give the office a call.

Fat, We've Had It All Wrong For Years!

June 23-24th issue of Time Magazine: Ending The War Against Fat, may help clear up some of the confusion!  We've been trained to believe fat is bad.

As a matter of fact, even in Chiropractic school we had some guys with the "low fat" attitude.  If you read any legitimate study on fats or butter or dairy, you quickly realize that a low fat diet isn't healthy.  All this plus the fact that I know some individuals that grew up on raw milk, lots of steak, and fat, and real butter; and guess what, they were healthier than everyone else.

Really, common sense will typically prevail.  If you go to the store and there's the real meal, then there's the one with the fat taken out or a bunch of chemicals added, common sense should tell you to stick with the more natural one.  That's the one that's unaltered and looks, feels, and tastes NORMAL.

If you ever have questions about eating healthy, talk to the chiropractors at Ct Spine for help...

How Does The Chiropractic Adjustment Give Me Pain Relief?

You see, mobilization gets rid of inflammation. Basically, motion allows inflammation to escape. You may even know someone that hurts when they stay in one position too long. Possibly sitting is painful but getting up and walking feels better. It's all because when we walk, we are moving, and inflammation can better move as well.

Puts things in alignment can also make a significant change. Normal alignment is a position that allows for the best motion an no nerve pressure. The goal of the chiropractic manipulation is exactly that. Restore motion, correct alignment, and therefore reduce pain.

Steroid Injections For Your Back

When does someone typically get an injection for their back pain.  First, it's only considered when the pain is very severe, has been present for a long period, and the patient has tried other methods of pain relief with no help.

Here's an example: Sam presented to his chiropractor's office with left side sciatica.  His pain is exacerbated with sitting long periods.  He was prescribed muscle relaxers by his primary care physician and referred to physical therapy. This returned no help so he went to his chiropractor.

Here he had temporary relief of his symptoms but pain would return.  He was seen for 5 visits and then that doctor referred him for an injection.  Sam had consistent pain at some level, as well as inflammation.  While the chiropractic treatments helped, as well as the recommended home ice did seem to help, pain was still present.

The steroid shot is a big blast of anti-inflammatory to the specific area.  It is typically the inflammation that puts pressure on nerves causing the back pain or sciatica.  Doing this may give the body that extra chance to heal, thus allowing inflammation to stay away and normal motion return to the spine.

The Glastonbury Chiropractor is located in central Connecticut- CT Spine and Disc Center specializes in patients who suffer from sciatica, disc degeneration, bulging disc or herniated disc in the lumbar spine. Across The Globe Drug Commercials Are Only Allowed in United States...

Maybe this has something to do with why we're the unhealthiest nation in the world.  Yep, that's right, out of all the developed nations for  health statistics, we are at the bottom again.  We actually continue to be at the bottom, which has been the case for years.

I had an idea because when we go to visit my wife's family in Canada, I noticed there are no pharmaceutical commercials on television.  That's when I really first realized this fact.

Here's another interesting fact I learned - when a drug commercial tells what the drug does, they have to mention the side effects.  If you see one of those commercials where there's just a couple on a beach holding hands and at the end you see "Cialis" come onto the screen, then they don't have to mention all the side effects.

Otherwise there's two and a half minutes of "...fatigue, bleeding out of your eyes, headache, diarrhea.... They are usually very scary, sometimes more so than the condition you're treating!

Tiger Woods and Back Surgery...

You may have heard that Tiger is back. He is going to be playing in a tournament at the Congressional Country Club, in Bethesda Maryland.  I actually thought he was nurturing a wounded knee.  Apparently he had back surgery.  He's had four surgeries on his left knee but this was a microdiscectomy (or microdecompression) in the low back.

What is a Microdiscectomy? That's where they shave off part of the disc that's causing pressure to the nerve.  This may be why you heard he had a pinched nerve.

With the best doctors and rehab, Tiger will be back for the next major PGA tournament. The scary thing is however the fact that you can have the best doctor but that doesn't mean a future free and clear of back pain.

Talk to the doctors at CT Spine & Disc Center to learn about a non-surgical approach to low back pain and/or disk pain.

Watch this video to learn more about Tiger's Back Surgery:

Can my Leg Pain cause my Back Pain?...

Problems at the Bottom Affect What's
Going on at the Top !
Many times back pain can come from something lower down. Much like a tower is only as sturdy as its base, your back is similar. Essentially your feet and legs are your base. If you are standing a certain way or your gait (the way that you walk and stand up) is altered it will start to irritate the back. Everything is connected - your feet to your ankles, ankles to your knees, knees to your hips, hips to your back. Sturdy your base and it often will stabilize the back. By the way, I'm not just referring to the lower back but the middle back as well.

The same is true in the opposite direction.  I've seen patients where they start out with neck pain but it travels to the mid-back.  Here's the bottom line...If part of the body needs help or support, your body will pull resources from somewhere else.  While your gait, your posture, and your regular activities can often give you pain that works its way up, pain can work its way down to.  Another example is arthritis; your body pulls calcium out of bones to get it when it needs it...

My Back Hurts So I Sleep On The Couch

Sleeping on the couch once in awhile is okay but it's not something to make a habit of. It's one thing if you were evicted and your staying at your friends place but quite another if you have a cozy bed waiting for you. Plus, if you are sleeping on your friends couch because you were evicted you probably have bigger problems than low back pain.

Here's the thing, the couch really isn't made for sleeping all night, every night. The support just isn't there for the spine. Not to mention, you may not use your regular pillow. Your usual neck pillow doesn't fit on the couch or you are in such an awkward position your head doesn't rest properly on that pillow.

So not only are the back and neck often crooked on the couch, the living room is also not always conducive to sleep. There's light shining from the kitchen, glowing from the tv, the dog is all over you, etc, etc...

My MRI Shows Stenosis, What Can I Do?

Treating Spinal Stenosis for Pain Relief
with Non Surgical Spinal Decompression
What causes that stenosis? Usually, a disrupted disc, inflammation, and arthritis all combine to clog the neural foramen.

This, by the way, is called foraminal stenosis vs. central stenosis. You see the spinal cord extends from the brain down. Off to the sides out holes in the spine (neural foramen) come nerve roots that branch into smaller and smaller nerves that go all over the body.

By doing Spinal Decompression we open up those disc spaces and pull disc material back into place. This keeps disc spaces and the holes for the nerves open. Much like a flat tire, that disc will flatten and bulge outward. This automatically reduces the size of the space the nerve has to travel out of. When we pull the disc back in place it will open up those holes slightly. Also by pulling the disc back in place we mobilize the spine as well; this helps to let inflammation dissipate.

Doing the drx decompression we can help take away severe lower back pain, and keep it away. Call today to find out if you are a possible candidate for this treatment.

What Is The Difference Between An Adjustment And Manipulation?

Here's on example of an adjustment. An adjustment is a specific manipulation, moving a joint or vertebrae in a particular manner or direction. A manipulation is non-specific; an example would be cracking your knuckles. Chiropractic Doctors are the only ones doing Adjustments! A manipulation will feel good but specific adjustments work much better in the long run...

The Weekend Warrior

What is that?  This will typically describe a lot of us. This is the person who goes out on the weekend plays golf, goes skiing, you name it, without really warming up much because they're not used to it. During the week they typically are working at a shop or office where they are sitting for 10 hours. Most all of those hours are sitting.  I know because I know many patient's who tell me they hardly get up from the chair, or the computer desk, even drink water or anything. So the name weekend warrior fits a lot of people well because there's a big golf game to play on the weekend or they got invited to go for a big ski weekend. They go all out and for some things the body is essentially not ready.

So what tends to happen? Well those weekend warriors tend to get hurt or get injured. That's when they end up in our office with a back strain muscle spasm and pain or maybe something worse.

The first step with me seeing one of these patients is to diagnose them. So we do an exam, we talk to the patient so I know what's going on. Find out their level pain or what symptoms they are having to determine what it is.  Once we know what it is, then we can give treatment.

Treatment typically will involve spinal or extremity adjusts as well as therapies.  These therapies may be manual work by the doctor as well as other modalities.

What happened to my Back?

Often we may be fine and then all of a sudden - wham!!! Back Pain.
What happened? Here's the thing - you may think you've been fine but the back may have been misaligned for some time.

Back Pain Can Strike at the Worst Times...
Not all the nerves detect pain, in fact, most don't. This means you can have pressure on a nerve or nerves and not necessarily know it's there. Then, eventually as that pressure increases or more nerves are affected, you get pain.

So here you are: "I've been fine, healthy" "now I have pain". When in fact you haven't been; you've been out of alignment for some time...

A big help is to see you Chiropractor periodically, pain or no pain. Have your alignment checked on a more regular basis.
