Being Proactive at Home Can Help Chiropractic Adjustments

Over the years I've found that adjustments make a huge difference in relieving back pain and keeping muscles loose for patients. However patients tend to get better faster if they do a few things at home too!

First of all adjustments that align the spine ans take pressure off of nerves is the #1 factor. Here's why: Muscles are controlled by nerves. If nerves are kept interference free, communication to the muscles is 100% and therefore they'll work like they should.

Second, when the spine and pelvis are in alignment muscles stay in balance. This allows for better mobility of the spine and allows inflammation to dissipate.

With lower back pain I have found that if patients can comfortably stretch their hamstrings and glut muscles it can speed the healing process. Here's why: Everything in the body works together. Hamstrings connect to the gluteus muscles, gluteus to the low back etc... Keeping the whole connection pathway to the low back loose and mobile helps us to restore motion and alignment in the back.

Steroid Injections Offer Short Term Relief, study shows

The pain associated with sciatica can be intense, often shooting pains down one leg due to pressure being put on the sciatic nerve. It can also involve numbness, tingling and weakness.

Study Shows that Steroid Injections
Offer Only Short Term Relief
One of the treatments that an Orthopedic Doctor may recommend for sciatica is an epidural. This involves the injection of a steroid into the joint spaces of the spine.

A new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine on Nov 13, showed that these steroid injections often only provide short term pain relief. This study involved 3100 patients who were followed for over a year. 23 Clinical trials were measured.

"The review showed that [epidural injections] offered only small, short-term improvement in pain and disability for people with sciatica and had no long-term effect," said Dr. Chris Maher, a professor of physiotherapy at the School of Public Health at the University of Sydney in Australia (co author).

The results showed that at 2 weeks and 3 months after treatment, 10 trials showed leg-pain relief and 14 reported improvements in disability. But after a year or more, no differences were found in leg pain, back pain or disability for those given injections compared to those given a placebo.

"Given that the treatment effect is likely to be small and short term, patients with sciatica should discuss the potential risks involved in [steroid injections] with their doctor before agreeing to the procedure" said Maher, who also is director of the George Institute for Global Health, in Sydney.

These findings are very similar to an earlier study that showed that the steroid injections are no better than anti inflammatory medications.

Tips On Having A Healthy, Pain-Free Day

Most of us lead a pretty full and busy life. Staying healthy and pain free will help us to keep going and to enjoy those sometimes hectic days. Here are some tips to maintain our health and stay pain free:
  1. Let's start with getting up in the morning. A few minutes of simple stretches is helps loosen us up.

  2. A few minutes of walking on the treadmill is great too. Get moving and getting the blood flowing is a big help for many reasons.

  3. A Healthy Breakfast. I just recently read online how they are showing that one of the worst things to do is skip this meal.

  4. Maintain good posture at work. Make sure you work station is ergonomically friendly.

  5. Drink water throughout the day

  6. Take Breaks. For most, we sit at a computer all day; get up and move around a bit. Kick off the heels, eat some fruit.

  7. Make sure your vehicle is posture friendly too. We end up spending alot of time in our cars, so make sure that isn't a source of pain.

  8. Sleep with a good pillow

A Great Immune System Helper!

It has been shown that colostrum gives your immune system a boost. Colostrum is actually what a breast feeding mom starts to produce before milk. It contains multiple components that destroy pathogens and bacteria. Mother Nature produces this to give our babies the start of healthy immunity.

Another great immune system helper is chiropractic care. Studies have shown that one’s immune system is stronger if they’re adjusted. This also makes a lot of sense- free our nervous system up so it can do what it’s supposed to and everything in the body works better.

Don’t leave out other common sensible approaches to avoid colds and germs. Things like washing hands and avoiding a lot of contact with sick people!

Easier alternative to Using Over the Door Neck Traction

I am often asked by patients to recommend a traction unit for their neck (for a pinched nerve in the neck, bulging disk or radiculopathy). Also, often times patients have been recommended an over the door neck traction unit. Not only this type of traction unit look archaic, but it looks scary at first to use. It is often recommended by Orthopedic Doctors because it is inexpensive, effective and does provide pain relief. But there are other neck traction units today that make traction easy and effective.

Regular Trac-Collar Neck Traction
While your orthopedist may want you to use over-the-door neck traction, an often easier option that he or she may not know about is the trac-collar. Imagine wearing a regular neck collar that you can inflate from the right and from the left. These come in regular (for the neck measuring 14"-16") and large size (for the neck measuring 16"-18").

Once the major symptoms subside (i.e. neck or arm pain, or something similar) than using the traction pillow may be a huge help. This pillow not only helps to get rid of those unwanted symptoms like neck pain but also can help improve and maintain neck alignment. This should be your overall end goal because you want to stay as healthy and pain free as possible for the long term.

"I Wish It Wasn't Such Hard Work To Make Sure What I'm Eating Is Good For Me!"...

Today I wanted to talk about “Genetically Engineered Foods.” Often referred to as GE or GE diet. It has been shown to be very unhealthy. Here’s the scary thing-many forms are feeding this to the livestock. You know that corn diet, well this is often a food that is genetically engineered and fed to the animals.

A GE diet has been linked to multiple food allergies, lowered immune function, and more. I don’t know if you remember but back when we were kids there wasn’t all this organic or grass fed, etc… stuff around. That’s because we didn’t have chemicals in half our foods or pesticides sprayed all over the place, or GE foods. There has actually been an outcry for un-tampered food products. I’m not even just talking about foods, I mean everything- laundry detergent, fabrics, water, toothpaste…

Neck Pain After Car Accident Two Years Ago?

Today's blog post comes from a Yahoo Question I read on the internet:

I am Kelsey 19 years old 5"5 150 pounds. I had a wreck 2 years ago and I flipped my car and now I have severe neck pain. Could the wreck be what caused this? But this happened 2 years ago why would it just now be hurting?

Hi Kelsy, unfortunately a car wreck can cause neck pain after two years- especially if you did not seek treatment right away. It also depends on the severity of the car accident in the first place. The car accident you describe sounds quite severe. At our Glastonbury Chiropractic Office we treat many car accident patients- the majority of patients seek treatment right away, within a few days- to a few weeks. However, sometimes they come in with pain many months after the accident. These cases can be more complicated and take longer to see relief of pain, just because of the distance in time. Also there can be a more build up of scar tissue, severely tightened muscles and also misalignment's in the cervical spine.

I am not sure the type of injury you sustained, and what type of treatment you received afterwards.  Hopefully you received some type of physio therapy or chiropractic treatment. Also, sometimes something else in your life can trigger the neck pain. It may be an area of weakness, and a simple forceful sneeze or sleeping on the wrong type of pillow can even trigger severe neck pain. Even something as simple as driving for a long period of time or some type of repetetive motion can bring the neck pain back.

A few things that I would reccomend to you:

  •  if you have not had any x-rays, please have those done. There may be degeneration going on in your neck from this car accident, especially if you did not get the treatment that you needed right away. If the neck pain also involves shooting pains, weakness, numbness and tingling, I would also recommend an MRI of the cervical spine
  •  see a chiropractor. They can assess what is going on in your neck area and recommend a treatment protocol. They can also recommend home treatment that you can do such as neck exercises.
  • see a massage therapist
  •  use ice or heat at home. In most cases if the pain has been going on for some time, you want to use heat therapy. If this is pain that came on suddenly, than ice will be the way to go.
  • use a proper neck support pillow at home. Using a flat pillow or for that matter, too many pillows can be the cause of more neck pain and it can aggravate existing neck pain
  • you may be a candidate for neck traction - this simple stretching of the neck can of great benefit for neck pain. If you have a herniated disc or bulging disc this can be of benefit as well

Kinesio Taping- I See It Everywhere Now

Increase Blood Flow, Enhance Movement and
Pain Relief with Kinesio Tape
First of all what is it?  Kinesio tape or Therapeutic tape or flexible tape is used to increase blood flow, enhance movement, provide pain relief as well as support weak joints or muscles. You probably saw it first when you watched beach volleyball in the Beijing Olympics four years ago. After watching this year’s London Olympics not only did I see it on the beach volleyballers, I saw it on track athletes and even swimmers. It has definitely proven to become a big help for athletes but even if you’re not completing in the Olympic Games it can be a big help.

Sitting Can Be Hazardous to Your Health

You might agree right away if you’re a couch potato.  But think about it.  If you work in an office you are probably spending a good majority of your day sitting most of the day, if not all day.

According to Cancer.org. A new study from the American Cancer Society researchers [found]  "it's not just how much physical activity you get, but how much time you spend sitting that can affect your risk of death. "

It is important for your health to be physically active.  Stopping at the gym before or after work, going for a walk or run daily in your neighborhood is important, however, it doesn’t always make up for the hours you may be sitting each day.

According to the Study, researchers found that "more leisure time spent sitting was associated with higher risks of mortality, particularly in women. Women who reported more than 6 hours/day of sitting were 37% more likely to die during the time period studied than those who sat fewer than 3 hours a day. Men who sat more than 6 hours a day were 18% more likely to die than those who sat fewer than 3 hours per day. "

If you are physically active, look at ways to decrease the amount of hours a day you spend sitting each day.  Whenever possible stand at your desk and move around.  Rather than sit down while on your coffee break or lunch break, walk for a few minutes.  Anything you can do to decrease the amount time you spend sitting helps.

I am a big fan of Dr Oz. Why? Because he is not afraid to show his viewers different methods of pain relief. He doesn't just talk about medications, and surgeries. In this segment he demonstrates a misalignment in the spine, and the chiropractic adjustment. He also shows us what a herniated disc looks like. Also check out the "bird dog", a low back strengthening exercise for the lumbar spine that I show many of my patients. Check it out in the video below:

Transition Areas of the Spine, What Are They? and What is there Significance?

Transition areas of the spine are when one part of the spine changes to another. When your cervical spine transitions to the dorsal spine and your dorsal spine changes to your lumbar spine. These are the areas that often run into problems.

You may think "so what is the big deal" that your cervical spine now becomes the thoracic spine and then that becomes the lumbar spine. What is the difference? Well if you are really talking about the name change, that is not a big deal. The reason for the significance is the change in the direction of the spinal curvatures.

In the neck we have a "C" Curve the C open to the backs. Then in the dorsal or midback area the curve opens to the other direction. Then back to the posterior in the lower back. Its because of this direction change that puts additional stress at these areas.

Now this comes into play with the muscles too. Muscles are attached to the spine and work hand in hand with it, so you can imagine with a change in the spinal curvatures who have muscle group interaction that changes. Out of the spine also comes nerves or nerve roots from the spinal cord. Through muscle fibers travel nerves to where they need to go. This is why we refer to the neuromusculoskeletal as such an important focus in chiropractic.

Sometimes your back pain may be directly at one of these transitional areas. Your pain may also be located elsewhere but may be a result of this transitional area.Visit your chiropractors office right away if you are experiencing pain in your back. The sooner you have the pain addressed usually means the quicker your chiropractor can help you get rid of it.

Study Shows that Spinal Manipulation is more Effective than Over the Counter Medications

Study Shows that Spinal Manipulation is more Effective than Over the Counter Medications
A study published in the Annals of Internal medicine (Jan 2012 issue) reports that conservative care treatment such as chiropractic manipulation or home exercise is more effective than pain medications for acute and subacute neck pain. This was shown for short and longer time treatment periods. This was a 6 year study and involved adults aged 18-65 with non specific mechanical neck pain for a duration of 2-12 weeks. There were three treatment groups:

  • Group 1: Received chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy using diversified techniques including adjustments and mobilization
  • Group 2: Received home exercises. They were recommended mobilization exercises, neck retraction, lateral bending motions, and scapular retraction. Each exercise was to be performed 5-10 times.
  • Group 3: Received medications: NSAIDS, acetaminophen, and muscle relaxers

Findings:

At 12 weeks, a significantly higher proportion of Group 1 (that received chiropractic treatment)reported a decrease in pain by at least 50%. This was also seen with long term improvement as well.

Low Back Injuries- No One Is Immune

Low Back injuries: No more is immune
What I have learned in my now 10 years of being in practice is everyone is a little different. The same adjustment for everyone really doesn’t work. The reason: everyone has different injuries. There are also thousands of different misalignment patterns. Dr. Wendy Schauor, chiropractor, had a major injury to her back about 10 years ago. She tried a lot of treatments and therapies with minimal results. Then she learned about using kettle bells (ACA news Jan ‘12).

The point is, there is no harm in trying something. If there’s no possible back lash or side effects, like from jumping into taking medication or doing some kind of surgery, then give it a try! Ask your chiropractor, he/she may know a lot about it.

Neck Misalignments and Neck Arthritis

Forward head posture can be the cause of a lot of neck pain, headaches, stiff neck, and neck misalignments. We talked about how the load can shift forward out of position in a previous blog post. This magnifies the downward pressure of gravity making the neck support not just a 10 lb skull but can become like a 40 lb skull or even more. I’ve found the best defense is our cervical traction pillow.

In addition there, of course, are neck exercises, chiropractic adjustments, things to avoid, etc… that might help. Now that you have started 2012 life has become ever busier with a pillow, you lay on it, go to sleep, and don’t think about it.

That’s why the cervical traction pillow is great for helping to improve forward head posture. It works while you sleep. By helping to improve your cervical curve with its built in neck roll, it helps align your neck. This therefore reduces the forward head posture, putting less stress on the cervical spine. Keeping stress and pressure on the neck will increase or speed degeneration. Yep, you guessed it-Neck Arthritis. The pillow will also help correct other misalignments. The neck can be translated to the side also. I know people who sleep on two pillows on their side. This cranks your head sideways or if you roll to your back it’s crashing your neck forward. The traction pillow helps your neck spine level when you’re on your side. So don’t wait any longer the faster you do them, the better.
